I have always been incredibly proud of my son and his service. I thought I knew his story and understood what he had done throughout his military career, but watching this film made me realize there was so much of his life I only knew from a distance.

As his mother, I was there for the first 18 years. After that, I experienced his life mostly through phone calls, letters, and the pieces he shared with me over the years. Hearing him tell his whole story in his own voice, from the young man who left home to the man he became, brought me to tears.

There were things I knew and things I thought I understood, but I don’t think I ever fully understood the sacrifices he made along the way. Hearing him talk about those years and seeing his entire journey brought together gave me a much deeper understanding of my son and the life he lived. As his mother, that meant more to me than I can really put into words.

When it was over, I immediately thought about my older son and his military service, and their father and his service. I want their stories captured too. You always think you know the people you love, but there are parts of their lives you simply weren’t there for.

What means the most to me is knowing that my son’s story is captured now. His voice, his experiences, his sacrifices, and the life he built through all of it are part of our family’s history forever. His legacy won’t just be something we remember or talk about, it’s here. And that means everything to me.

After meeting Joe in 2008, serving closely with him from 2012 to 2015, and maintaining a close friendship ever since, I truly believed I knew his story. After watching his film, I can honestly say I was surprised by how much I didn’t know. When Joe asked me to watch his Cinematic DD-214 and tell him what I thought, I sat down with a notepad and pen, ready to document every recommendation and critique the way good teammates do for each other. I remember thinking, I already know his story. We’ve been friends for nearly 18 years. This should be easy.

Within the first 30 seconds, I forgot about the notepad. I was completely drawn in by how relaxed, honest, and personal it felt. It was simply Joe telling his story, in his own words and from his own point of view. What struck me most was that I learned more about Joe in that short film than I ever had at one time. I’m almost embarrassed to say that I knew far more about Joe the SEAL than I did Joe the man. The deployments, awards, and milestones tell part of a veteran’s story, but I think it’s often the smaller details that tell you who someone really is, why they chose to serve, the sacrifices they made, what shaped them along the way, and what their family meant to them through it all. A shadow box and a service record can tell you what someone did. They can’t always tell you who that person was. That’s what hit me about this film.

I also found myself thinking about what it would mean for Joe’s family to have this years from now. His children and grandchildren won’t have to piece together his story from medals, photographs, or stories they’ve heard from someone else. They’ll be able to hear it from him. As veterans, most of us probably don’t spend much time thinking about preserving our own story. But after watching Joe’s, I understand why it matters. It’s more than a record of his service. It’s his story, in his voice, preserved for the people who matter most.
